The Role of Community Pharmacists in Australia
In Australia, pharmacy is one of the most trusted professions and most pharmacists work either in the hospital or community setting. About two-thirds of Australia’s registered pharmacists work in community pharmacies (e.g. shopping centres, retail strips, etc). Community pharmacists are medicine experts, providing professional advice and counselling on medications, including their use and effects, as well as general healthcare. They are an essential part of the wider healthcare system.
Here are some interesting facts about Australian community pharmacy:
-As of 18 July 2022, there are 5875 community pharmacies in Australia
-The average Australian visits a community pharmacy 18 times a year
- Community pharmacies are the most frequently accessed and most accessible health destination, with over 426.8 million individual patient visits annually and 2,118 pharmacies open after-hours, including weekends
-In 2021, under the PBS (Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme) and RPBS(Repatriation Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme), community pharmacies dispensed almost 218.3 million government subsidised prescriptions.
- In capital cities, 97% of people have access to at least one pharmacy within 2.5 km radius, while in the rest of Australia 66% of people are within 2.5 km of a pharmacy
- More than 94% of community pharmacies nationwide have achieved quality accreditation
-As of 30 June 2022, there were 35,368 registered pharmacists in Australia. 63.7% of pharmacists are women; and about 59% are under 40 years of age
- Between July 2020 and June 2021 there were 15.7 million dose administration aids provided by community pharmacies to patients to assist them to remain living at home.
A community pharmacist’s primary role is to dispense prescription medications and to provide advice and counselling.
Primary care and over the counter medicines is another important area. Pharmacists are usually the ‘first port of call’ in response to symptoms. Community pharmacies have developed procedures for information gathering when responding to request for advice that identify when the presenting problem can be managed within the pharmacy and when referral for medical advice is needed. Common areas of care include the following:
Cough and cold
Gastro-intestinal tract problems
Skin conditions
Pain conditions
Women’s health ie vaginal thrush
Eye and ear problems
Childhood conditions
Insomnia
Weight loss
Wound care
Contraception: emergency contraceptive pill
Smoking cessation
Other roles provided in the community pharmacy include but are not limited to the following:
Extemporaneous preparation of medicines
Procurement of medicines
Opioid replacement therapy and needle and syringes supply i.e. Methadone program
Clozapine supply
Preparation of dose administration aids for nursing homes and individual patients, i.e. dosettes and Webster-pak
Nutrition and vitamin selection
Blood pressure testing and monitoring
National Diabetes Services Scheme access points
Sleep apnoea devices
Return of Unwanted Medicines Program
Community pharmacists in all States and Territories can now be trained to administer vaccinations to adults
As of January 2022, the average wage for early career pharmacists (those with less than 10 years’ experience) is $66,955 per year ($32.77 per hour). The average base salary across the profession is $80,943 per year .
